my life

I know it could be worse than ADHD, but sometimes I would like to wear a necklace that says, “I am not brainless or insane”

"Having ADHD while enrolled in school, is like playing DDR on expert for the first time ever."
—H.Anna.G. (via forev3rawake)
"If one parent has ADD, the odds of her children inheriting it are about 30 percent for each child. If both parents have ADD, the odds increase to more than 50 percent for each child. Keep in mind, those numbers also mean that no child may inherit it, or that all in a given family may. These are just probabilities. It’s like flipping a coin and knowing that heads will occur 50 percent of the time—sometimes you will get three heads in a row even though the probability of heads each time you toss the coin is 50 percent. Looking at children already born, if one child has ADD, there is a 30 percent chance that each sibling has it too."

Did you know Zooey Deschanel has ADHD?

Did you know Zooey Deschanel has ADHD?

“Are you an unmedicated adult with Attention Deficit Disorder who also LOVES to do crafts? I AM! I barely have the patience to write this opening paragraph (I have already gotten up four times), so I need to focus my unfocused mind on projects that can be completed very quickly.”

woah this totally adds fodder to my little theory… or… idea for a piece or something? — about the whole manic pixie dream girl archetype. like yeah zooey epitomizes the whole quirky awkward girl thing and it’s really only considered okay and cute because she fits the beauty standard.. thin, white, big eyes, long hair, etc…. she is BEAUTIFUL, right? so it’s okay for her to be awkward. you can also critique the whole MPDG thing from a deconstructing hipsterism kind of perspective too… the whole indie goddess thing. and yeah this has been criticized because of her whole hip, “childish” chic popular image and that someone that awks wouldn’t be considered cool if not for these other factors (again, fitting beauty standard, indie hipster “values” [??] —- but i’ve also seen pretty problematic ableist stuff (i forget where) where people say that she (zooey — i guess it’s refering to her character on the new girl but it’s also about her whole persona because that’s how she’s typecast) isn’t quirky, she’s psycho/an aspie or something, which is hella ableist, obvi.

anyway i was thinking of writing something about that, how yes the whole zooey MPDG indie quirky goddess thing is really messed up BUT also how it’s refreshing to see a socially awkward girl character on TV and how i sort of see myself reflected in her due to the weird behaviour… and here we are with the proof!

NUANCED CRITIQUES, PEOPLE. anyway i’m supposed to be drying my hair and making dinner right now so i can go to rogers to deal with phone stuff before nine so my phone doesn’t get cut off and then meet a friend at 9 and WHAT AM I DOING WRITING ABOUT INTERSECTIONS BETWEEN ZOOEY, MPDG, FEMINIST CRITIQUES, DECONSTRUCTING, ADHD, AND ABLEIST BULLSHIT ON TUMBLR?

xoxo, the procrastinatrix.

can i just

Washing the Dog and Fucking the Dog

disordered-thoughts:

My friend Alex told me a story once of some terminology his family uses for kinds of procrastination.

So imagine someone is coming over to your house later. There are twenty things you need to do to feel as though your house is ready for the guest. This is your to-do list, the things you need to do to feel like your life is in order.

If you’re doing what you need to, you’re vacuuming, and finding that book you borrowed from them, and doing the dishes. That’s when you’re knocking things off of your to-do list and even getting them done in priority order.

But sometimes you end up washing the dog. Your dog sure needed washing, but maybe not today. This is when you’re doing, as I’ve done a lot today, things that you did need to do at some point, but are not your top priority right now. Tomorrow I have a neuroscience test, and I’ve gone to get the haircut I’ve needed for 4 weeks, written emails I’ve needed to do all weekend, taken a shower I could’ve taken later (my legs needed shaved- they were bothering me!) and called two doctors who I needed to call within the next week. I have not studied yet. I’ve been washing the dog.

Washing the dog, however, is better than fucking the dog. Because that is when you’re doing something that doesn’t need done- not by you, not by someone else, not now, not ever. It happens to me too. That’s why I spent all of finals week my first year of college watching Seasons 2-4 of Heroes (trust me, nobody ever needs to watch those) while studying biology. It’s also why I did my Chinese homework this Monday during lunch- because I thought I needed to get my whole team on my game of Pokemon Black up to level 80, which took a decent amount of my Friday night.

Washing the dog makes me feel slightly better. I still feel bad for not having studied yet for my test tomorrow, but at least I knocked four things off of my to-do list. I actually don’t hate myself for days like this- even though I haven’t done the work I want to do, and that usually doesn’t sit well with me, I feel okay knowing that I’ve gotten important things done.

But now I’m probably fucking the dog. On another tab, I’ve got season 5 of gossip girl open, and I’ve got a feeling that I really don’t need to know what happens there. On the other hand, I’ve got a test tomorrow and I should probably learn what calmodulin does before going in there or things are going to be a bit difficult.

Still here’s another quick vocabulary lesson of words I use to talk about my disorder. Hope you’re all having a good day!

:D Awesome terminology. I’ve been fucking the dog all day. (Oh my god.) Should have been studying as well, and instead I’ve had fifteen tabs open all day (tabs are my ruin) and I don’t even remember what they were.

Did you know? Sir Richard Branson has ADHD.

adhdisme:

“Virgin Founder and adventurer Sir Richard Branson has ADHD — but that hasn’t stopped him from owning a major airline, sending tourists into space, or building an underwater plane.

Branson’s living proof of the statistic reported in Psychology Today that people with ADHD are 300% more likely to start their own company — indeed, he started up his own magazine called Student when he was just 16.”

People around me are basically living proof for that statistic! Both my dad who probably has ADHD-PI (doesn’t want to have himself tested) and my uncle who has ADHD started their own restaurants, and there’s this sixty year old with ADHD who owns an ice cream shop, and a friend of my mother’s who runs some sort of company. Thinking about it, I don’t know anyone with ADHD who isn’t self-employed.

Then again, I don’t know that many people with ADHD.

I still think I would probably get bored three days after I even started planning on something and ditch everything…

I’m back on my old meds and it’s great. I had a little less trouble being ready on time in today’s test.
